Review: Sleepy Hollow Cabins & Hotel

Less touristed than Big Bear, Crestline (about 9 miles from Lake Arrowhead) has it’s own small lake, loads of casual restaurants and several hiking trails for those who are big on the outdoorsy life. In order to embrace our new mountain existence, we rented a cabin at Sleepy Hollow Cabins & Hotel. And yes, I’m still fairly amused that I can tell people I stayed in Sleepy Hollow – though I’m happy to report that not a single headless horseman was in evidence (the entire town seems pretty into Halloween, based on all the decorations).

As you can see, our place was the “Cozy Corner.” It was well-named, as the cabin is on the far corner of the property, beyond the hotel. Trees are directly behind it, and it feels more remote than it actually is. It’s rare to have outdoor space in cabin rentals (that don’t cost a fortune), but this place had a lovely enclosed front courtyard with a picnic table and a small back porch complete with chairs — perfect for working or having profound thoughts (or dessert).

The interior of the cabin was perfect! It had a big living room with a work table, so both Andy and I could get work done during our non-exploring hours. Decor was rustic and comfortable, full of wood accents and an incredibly comfortable bed. It also had a fireplace. The nights were probably cold enough to use it (high 50s), but since we left a place that was 100 degrees, it felt odd to light any fires. The cabin came with a full kitchen, separate bedroom and very clean bathroom. We did decide to have most meals away, but a grocery store was about a block down the street for easy stocking (and easy after-hours snacking — which we may have done).

The cabin is a short walk to Lake Gregory and an easy distance to a wide range of casual restaurants and shops. It also made a great base for exploring the other nearby towns like Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear and Twin Peaks (yes, that is the name).

Final rating? Thumbs up all around. It was clean, safe and very comfortable. It would be an ideal solo writing retreat, but their bigger cabins would work well for groups, too. And if you are looking to escape the weather and the crazy scene in LA, it should definitely make your “getaway” list.

Note: The property also has a small pool/hot tub area. The pool is closed for the winter, so I didn’t feel comfortable including it in the review, but keep it in mind if you are traveling up there in the summer months, and you want a place with that type of amenity.
