Restaurant Review: Avalon Grille

Avalon Grille sits in a prime location – on the corner of Crescent and Catalina in Avalon. With two walls entirely of windows, they do their best to bring the beauty of the ocean and the island into the restaurant. Couple that with a menu that is both unique and delicious, and we feel like we found an upscale winner!

Don’t let the upscale worry you. It is still an island restaurant, so you won’t suddenly be required to change into suits and dresses to dine. Dinners there do feel a bit more elegant than the flip flops usually worn, but they welcome everyone. Lunches still retain that comfy island vibe. They even have sports on at the bar for added entertainment (something that came in very handy when we wanted to watch the Cavs game on Christmas and the actual sports bar/restaurant was closed).

What makes the menu unique? Items like Bison burgers are part of their standard menu. The brussels sprouts are mixed with pork belly. And, of course, there is some pretty fabulous seafood. But they also include unique fixings like “tomato jam” that only serve to heighten the flavors.

We ended up eating here twice: once for a very late lunch around 3:00pm on Christmas Eve and then spent a couple of hours here on Christmas day chatting with the bartender and our waiter (who turned out to be the fourth generation of Catalina residents in his family) while we watched basketball. We loved everything we tried from the burgers with the tomato jam to the roasted beet hummus and sea salt fries. And because we had visited the Casino the day before, we had a 10% off coupon through Visit Catalina. Getting in for these off lunches was easy, but we did notice a significant dinner crowd, so consider making reservations for special dinners.

The prices are a little higher than some of the more casual places on the island, but it is a lovely restaurant that is worth the small splurge (and it really is just a small increase). You could save it for a special evening meal, or sit back and enjoy the view while noshing during a leisurely lunch. Either way, you will be glad you added the Avalon Grille to your itinerary.
