Drone lights in the sky are all over social media and the news right now. While I can’t give you any info about New Jersey (or anywhere else they have appeared), I can tell you that the drone lights in the sky over Marina del Rey on December 14th were all about the holidays.
Here, the drone show lit up the sky as a way to quietly (and with less debris) but brilliantly bring joy to those eagerly awaiting the Marina Holiday Boat Parade. It’s an annual event that fills the harbor with boats adorned with dazzling lights.
A much larger party was going on across the way in Burton Chace Park. In fact, they had holiday events going on all day. And I’m sure if you went to the restaurants by Fisherman’s Village, you also had some pretty great food.
We wanted a slightly quieter affair, so we gathered with other local boaters and met up with friends to enjoy the parade from the docks and ramps. It allowed us to meander slowly down the basin. We followed the boats as they got ready and saw them launch the parade. Plus, we enjoyed meeting people (and their dogs!) as we walked along the docks.
No matter where you watched, you got a great view, and the weather largely cooperated. When we went two years ago, I was freezing! While it was chilly this year, I didn’t feel I had to be bundled up. It also made it a lot more fun for the kids out there this year.
But before we get to the videos of the parade, I thought you might like to see the drone lights and some of the Christmas celebrations that went on as the parade launched.
Do I have a favorite? I think it was the seal, but the dolphin was also gorgeous — particularly with the full moon. But I loved them all and appreciated that we didn’t put everyone through the trauma of explosions to enjoy it.
